The Indian Movie industry lost one of its greatest artists S.P. Balasubramaniam, who succumbed to post COVID-19 complications in Chennai. SPB’s demise saw an outpouring of grief from all corners of the country even as he was given a fitting farewell with full state honours and a 21 gun salute. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E.K. Palaniswami requested the Central Government to confer the Bharat Ratna on SPB for his outstanding contribution to the field of music.
The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan also wrote to the Central Government requesting Narendra Modi to confer the Bharat Ratna on SPB. Kamal Haasan has expressed his gratitude and thanks to Y.S. Jagan for his letter to the Central Government. The Chief Minister said, “As a tribute to the legendary singer for his outstanding contribution in the field of music and art, I request you to confer the Bharat Ratna on him (sic.)” Kamal Haasan replied saying “Thank you Honourable CM of Andhra Pradesh.’ The honor you seek for our brother Shri.S.P.Balasubramaniam is a sentiment which true fans of his voice will echo, not only in Tamilnadu but throughout the whole nation (sic.)”

S.P. Balasubramaniam was admitted to the MGM Hospital in Chennai on August 5th when he tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, his condition has slowly deteriorated and SPB had to be put on a ventilator. Although the legendary singer tested negative for the COVID-19 virus, he succumbed to post COVID complications and passed away.
