Nithiin stars as Aditya, who is imprisoned on charges of terrorism and is sentenced to death.  Aditya believes he is wrongly imprisoned as he is in no way related to the terrorism charges but no one believes him.  Manasa (Rakul Preet Singh,) a lawyer takes up Aditya’s case upon her father’s insistence as he (father) believes it will be good for Manasa’s career.  Aditya meets Sai Chand, another prison inmate from whom he learns the game of chess.  It turns out Aditya is a natural prodigy at the game and is on a grandmaster level.  Manasa believes Aditya has a chance for a presidential pardon, if he competes in national championships and gets noticed.  How Aditya manages to clear his name with the game of chess and at the same time fighting off rogue prison inmates forms the rest of the movie.

Nithiin who is usually known for his romantic roles is seen in a serious avatar in Check.  Nithiin looked at ease while portraying the steely determination which is needed while playing chess.   None of the scenes which have chess being played in them looked out of place and is seamlessly integrated into the movie.  Nithiin shone when portraying Aditya’s helplessness at  being wrongly incarcerated.  Rakul Preet Singh, as a steadfast lawyer does a commendable job and explains the concept of the presidential pardon in a simple and understandable manner.  Priya Prakash Varrier, who plays Nithiin’s love interest lived up to her reputation as a romantic actress.

Chandra Sekhar Yeleti, the director of Check, once again managed to combine two different concepts to make a wonderful movie.  It is quite rare to see how a wrongly imprisoned guy manages to achieve his freedom using the game of chess.  The final game at the climax would definitely keep you standing on your toes from the suspense and the intensity.

If you are looking to watch something quite different from the regular romantic genres, then Check is the perfect watch for you.  Do watch the movie over the weekend and let Nithiin checkmate you!
