Jagpathi Babu (born as Jagapathi Rao Chowdary) is a popular Indian actor who predominantly works in Telugu Cinema. Son of a popular producer cum director VB Rajendra Prasad who delivered many blockbusters like Dasarabullodu, Bangaru Babu, Jagapathi Babu never had plans to be an actor initially.
After completing his formal education, Jagapathi Babu was taking care of furniture business owned by his father. His impeccable macho looks has left many swooning and few advised him to take up acting as the profession which made him change his plans.
The actor made acting debut with Manchi Manushulu as a child artist an eminently forgettable debut as a hero with Simha Swapnam followed by few unsatisfactory movies. He got the first major breakthrough with AM Ratnam’s Peddarikam followed by Ram Gopal Varma’s Gayam which brought him the due recognition as an actor and the resurgence started.
In an age when family dramas were on the verge of being evanescent, Jagapathi Babu has become the reckoning force who continued to be a marquee draw the audience to the theaters with Shubalagnam, which happens to be the biggest hits of his career. Forming popular screen pairs with Soundarya, Priyamani, the dapper Jagapathi Babu became a romantic icon. But Jagapathi Babu seemed to gravitate towards roles that scorched the viewers with sheer intensity.
The versatile actor has played myriad roles, from comedy to action in films which span gangster flicks, love stories, and modern-day social themes. His films were as much entertaining, as they carried a social message. He was careful about the roles he chose to play and worked with the best directors in the industry. Some of his memorable films are Peddarikam, Shubalagnam, Mavichiguru, Anthapuram, Srimanthudu and Legend.
The entire 1990s were a happy period, winning Jagapathi Babu artistic acclaim as a star Hero. He is a character actor now; but significantly, the roles continues to be pivotal.
