Chitra (born as Krishnan Nair Shanthakumari Chitra) is an Indian playback singer and winner of 31 State film awards and 6 National Film Awards (the most by any female singer in India). Born in a family of musicians, Chitra did her Post graduation in music from the University of Kerala.
Her father Krishnan Nair was a popular singer in Malayalam who taught her the basics of music during her initial stages and later got trained in Carnatic music under the tutelage of K Omanakutty. Chitra was introduced to the Malayalam industry by MG Radhakrishnan in 1979.
In the course of time, Chitra has built a formidable reputation and repertoire as a playback singer and catapulted herself to the center stage in the South India. In a career spanning over 35 years, Chitra has been conferred with the honorary “Padmashree” award “Lifetime Achievement Award” for her outstanding contribution towards the Indian music.
