Ghani Review:

Story:

Ghani (Varun Tej) is the son of 2004 Andhra Pradesh state boxing champion, Vikramaditya (Upendra).  He becomes the district boxing champion against his mother’s will and to prove the worth of genuine professional boxers, despite his father winning the championship illegally.  He later comes to know about the past and the injustice happened to his father through Vijendra Sinha (Suniel Shetty), an opponent to his father once.  How Ghani takes revenge for his father’s death is the rest of the story.

On Screen Performances:

Varun Tej is the central attraction of the film.  The depth in his acting has been increased to a higher level in Ghani.  His looks, body language and screen presence exactly resembles that of a professional boxer.  Varun made an immense physical transformation.  All the hard work and efforts he had put in for the past two years had completely been paid off.  We can experience an absolutely intense performance from Varun, especially in all the action and boxing episodes, most importantly the one before interval and in the climax.

Saiee Manjrekar played the love interest of Varun in the film.  She gets a couple of scenes in college life in the first half to run the romantic part in the film.  She looks beautiful and attractive on screen.  The Romeo Juliet song looks good from her point of view.  The actress gets a decent screen presence in the second half at the pre-climax block.

Upendra gets a major and important role as Varun’s father.  He played the role of a boxing champion in the film.  Upendra’s story is the soul of the entire film.  Upendra uses all his experience and exposes his intensity at the best.

Suniel Shetty played the coach of Varun and he gets another major role.  Suniel perfectly fits the role of a coach.

Naveen Chandra plays the boxing competitor to Varun.  He excelled in his role and got great attention.

Jagapathi Babu as the head of betting syndicate in IBL does well as he always does in the given role.

Off Screen Highlights:

Kiran Korrapati wrote an exceptional story for the film.  He packed the film with all the emotions and added the layers of professional boxing so perfectly.  The screenplay in the second half of the film is so engaging and tight.  Also, he handled the direction so well even though being a debutant.

The production values of the film are so great.  The film looks lavish and rich in all the frames.  The setup of all the boxing episodes is brilliant and worth every penny.

Thaman S adds his powerful background score to the film again.  He uplifted the intensity of all the boxing episodes.  The Ghani Anthem is another major highlight from his music.

Cinematography and Editing are good.  Especially the frame setup in the boxing episodes and the cuts look so precise and perfect.

Endnote:

Ghani is surely one of the best sports dramas of Telugu cinema.  The story itself is great with the hidden layers of projecting IBL betting packed with the elements of the lead character’s family struggles and the injustices happening in sports.  Varun Tej pulled off the film with his appreciable changeover and performance.  With the engaging screenplay and all other main characters playing exceptionally well sticking to the story, the film is a worth watching sports drama.  Also, the emotional scenes draw the attention of the family audience too.  So, if you are either a fan of sports films or stories of emotions, then Ghani is a perfect pickup for the weekend.
