SS Rajamouli’s period drama RRR starring Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn hit the Indian film industry like a tsunami. This historical fiction is now one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2022. Senior technician, V Srinivas Mohan, is the visual effects supervisor for the epic movie. In total, the animation of RRR took six months and the LED programming took another month. The visual effects team worked on nearly 50 animal VFX shots.
However, the task was not simple, he claimed. Before the release of RRR, Mohan watched the film twelve times in different formats to verify the quality. Here are some excerpts from his recent interview:
RRR was different from Baahubali
Mohan has bagged the four times National Awards for the Tamil films Magic Magic, Sivaji, Enthiran and Telugu magnum opus Baahubali – The Beginning. Rajamouli’s brief to Mohan for RRR was different from Baahubali. “He told me that RRR is an emotional drama, focused on the characters played by NTR and Ram Charan. On the other hand, the visual effects should enhance the narration rather than overshadow it.”, revealed Mohan.
RRR has nearly 2800 VFX shots
In the visual effects team, Sabu Cyril’s production design department and cinematographer K K Senthil Kumar were involved. They dedicated more than seven months to pre-production work of RRR. They dealt with 18 VFX studios and the film had nearly 2800 VFX shots, many of which may not be even spotted by viewers. Contrary to the popular notion, when the VFX does not divert viewers from the main drama, it is a victory.
This Is How The Animal Sequences Shot
Radio-controlled cars were employed to mimic the movements of animals like tiger, bear, wolves and antelopes. The cars were operated at required speeds, their movements were marked and the actors were choreographed to move accordingly.
NTR-Tiger scene In RRR
When we show NTR taking on an imagery (CGI ) tiger, the animal has to look realistic to make the audiences believe that a struggle is on. Going back and forth to get the correct look was challenging.
90% of the scene was visual effects!
The bridge episode that marks the coming together of Ram Charan who is personified as fire and NTR who is personified as water was 90% visual effects. Another scene that has encroached a lot of appreciation is the transformation of Ram Charan’s character.
The best organisations like Makuta, MPC, ReDefine, Surpreez, Firefly Creative Studio, and Digital Domain were the main VFX studios that worked for RRR movie.
