Tollywood’s young and talented director, producer, Nag Ashwin, needs no detailed introduction. He proved his mettle and range with his movies Mahanati, Jathi Ratnalu etc. He is teaming up with Prabhas and Deepika Padukone for Project K to break the records one more time.
Ashwin recently made sensible and interesting comments about the survival of movie theatres in the Telugu states. He opined that small budget movies like Jathi Ratnalu and Uppena saved the theatres from shutting down during the tough times of Coronavirus pandemic onset. He also shared his encounter with a theatre owner through one of his social media posts.
He elaborated in the post, “I met a theater owner in Tirupati on the second day. She said if not for Jathiratnalu and Uppena at least a 100 or more theatres would have closed in the pandemic. This is what I remember and what I feel is the greatest victory of this film. We helped save cinema. We kept the magic of theaters alive. Thanks to all the Jathiratnalu out there… Life oka zindagi aipoindi”
Comedy entertainer, Jathi Ratnalu, is directed by Anudeep KV and produced by Nag Ashwin under Swapna Cinema. The multistarrer has Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi, Rahul Ramakrishna and Faria Abdullah in its lead cast while Murali Sharma, Brahmanandam and Naresh play supporting roles. Released theatrically on 11th March 2021, Jathi Ratnalu went on to become a blockbuster at the box office.
The other film Uppena is a romantic drama film written and directed by debutant Buchi Babu Sana. The film is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar of Mythri Movie Makers in association with Sukumar Writings. The film features debutants Panja Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty as the lead pair, and Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi in a vital role.
Uppena released theatrically on 12th February 2021 and minted well at the box office. It emerged as the highest-grossing Telugu film for a debut actor, surpassing the record of Chirutha.
Nag Ashwin received the Filmfare Award for Best Director at the 66th Filmfare Awards South for Mahanati, the biographical film of Tollywood’s great actress, Saavitri. In the 66th National Film Awards 2019, the film won accolades including the Best Feature Film in Telugu.
