Legendary music director Bappi Lahiri passed away in Mumbai today at the age of 69. In spite of having rendered most of his services to Bollywood, he had a long term association with Telugu movies as well. Let’s recollect the glimpses of the musician’s kinship with Tollywood. Here are the details of his first and last film as a music director and singer in Telugu.
Do you know who introduced Bappi Lahiri to the Telugu film industry?
He is none other than Super Star Krishna. The Bollywood composer’s debut film in Telugu as a music director is Krishna starrer Simhasanam released in 1986. The Super Star himself produced and directed the movie. Krishna produced the film as Simhasanam in Telugu and as Singhasan in Hindi. The song Aakasamlo Oka Thara… or its Hindi version from the movie still resonates somewhere in the country. King of Disco, Bappi’s songs gave a boost to the movie’s success.
His last Telugu film was the 2020 movie Disco Raja, an album, originally composed by Thaman S. But Bappi Lahiri was brought on board to sing the song Rum Pum Bum with Sri Krishna and Ravi Teja, which was his last song he sung in Telugu. On the other hand, Bappi Lahiri scored the music for the song Chushale … Chushale of Mohan Babu’s multistarrer Pandavulu Pandavulu Thummeda. As a music director, it was his last film in Telugu.
After Simhasanam, Bappi Lahiri composed music for Krishna’s Sankharavam too. Chiranjeevi had State Rowdy, Gang Leader, Rowdy Alludu with him while Balakrishna’s Rowdy Inspector Nippu Ravva and Mohan Babu’s Rowdy Gari Pellam and Punyabhoomi Naa Desam’s music was also scored by Bappi. Here, it is noteworthy that Nippu Ravva background music was provided by AR Rahman. The Telugu Film Industry forever remembers the music composer.
