Thalaivi” Telugu Movie Review:

Story:

Thalaivi is the biopic of the late actress and chief minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa.  The story starts with her journey into cinema and the stellar career she had.  The story then moves into the relationship between Jayalaltihaa and MGR, her political entry and the highs and lows she went through.

Performances:

Kangana Ranaut as Jayalalithaa is impeccable right from the way she looks to portraying the various shades of Jayalalithaa’s persona.  She does not imitate or mimic but leaves a strong impression of Jayalalithaa.  Arvind Swami looks effortless in his portrayal of MGR bringing subtle mannerisms that match the late actor’s aura.  Bhagyashree is endearing as Jayalilthaa’s mother.  Madhoo’s acting and on screen presence with Arvind Swami reminds us of the yesteryear classic Roja.

Highlights:

The stunning visuals, the huge sets and the sheer grandeur we can witness is the biggest highlight of the film.  The funeral scene of MGR which shows a shattered Jayalaithaa and his grieving supporters is one of the most impactful scenes in recent times.  The dialogues are well written and make a lasting impression.

Verdict:

Laced with powerful performances, dreamy song sequences and all the romance between Jayalalithaa and MGR, the first half of the movie goes like a breeze.  The second half forays into the political journey of MGR and Jayalalithaa with a lot of intense dialogues making it seem like a lengthy watch.  If watching well made biopics and movies with spectacular visuals is your cup of tea, go watch Thalaivi in your nearest theatres.
