Ishq” Telugu Movie Review:

Story:

Siddhu (Teja Sajja) and Anu (Priya Prakash Varrier) are a young couple in love.  The couple craves for some private time and plans for a romantic getaway on Anu’s birthday.  Things take an unexpected turn when they encounter a man (Ravindra Vijay) on their way.

Turning Point:

The turning point in the story arrives when the young couple’s tryst invites the attention of two fanatic men.  Their happy time soon changes into a nightmare and changes their relationship course forever.

Performances:

Ishq is a content driven movie where the commercial elements take a back seat.  In such movies, actors and the plot becomes the deciding factor of how the movie is going to turn out.  Teja Sajja had some big shoes to fill in, as his character in the original was essayed by Shane Nigam.  The young actor took a risk so early into his career and put forth an impressive performance given the challenging and layered role.  Priya Prakash Varrier is satisfactory in her character as Anu.  Ravindra Vijay emerges as a commendable performer and gets into the skin of his character.  He terrifies you.

Highlights:

The story and the unexpected turn it takes is the hero of the movie.  Most often not, Telugu audiences are fed with unrealistic, overdramatic and almost fairytale-like romances.  Ishq is just the opposite.  The movie deals with the themes of toxic masculinity and moral policing, two prevalent issues even in 21st century urban India.  The movie breaks the outdated notions of what heroes or the protagonists of a movie should be like, that an average Telugu audience carry.   It also showcases the other side of humans, which only demonstrates itself in the least expected times and ways.

Verdict:

Ishq is a decent remake which stays true to the original in terms of story and execution.  However, there are things that have scope for improvement like the writing and direction.  The movie has a compelling story, good acting performances and gives a much needed message to the viewers.  If you are up for all these, then Ishq definitely is your cup of tea.  Head over to the theatres to watch Ishq: Not a love story.
