India is the land of spirituality and devotion. India is also a land of cinema. When cinema and devotion come together we have movies like Annamayya. This was a biographical movie based on the poet, saint and musician Tallapaka Annamacharya. On this day, 24 years ago, Annamayya starring Nagarjuna in the titular role was released.
There are certain movies we grow up watching and those movies become an important part of our memories. One such movie is Annamayya. Every 1990s kid in the Telugu states remembers watching this movie. Nagarjuna who was known for his romantic and action roles, essayed a never seen before role as Annamayya. Raghavendra Rao as the director crafted Annamayya in such a way, it filled the audiences with devotion. Ramya Krishnan and Kasthuri as the female leads were alluring. Suman’s portrayal of Lord Vishnu and Bhanupriya as Goddess Padmavati received critical acclaim. Mohan Babu and Roja charmed in their roles as Saluva Narasimha Deva Raya and his wife.
When we talk about Annamaya, we cannot not talk about the music by M. M. Keervani. He made use of the Keerthanas composed by Annamacharya and made everyone feel the devotion in their hearts. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam’s voice and the songs he has sung for this movie are evergreen and simply one of the most iconic discographies in Telugu cinema. This movie won several awards including two National Awards.
