Nag Ashwin debuted as a director in the Telugu film industry with the movie Yevade Subramanyam (2015.) He later directed the blockbuster hit Mahanati (2018) starring Keerthy Suresh. With only two movies as a director, how did he end up becoming the soulful director of Telugu cinema?
Yevade Subramanyam: This movie starred Nani as a money minded corporate guy who embarks on a once in a lifetime trip to the Himalayas. Yevade Subramanyam is about urban life. Many live their lives chasing after materialistic things and never being truly happy. Through Yevade Subramanyam, Nag Ashwin portrayed the beauty of life and being content with what you have. Yevade Subramanyam is one the most feel good Telugu movies you will ever watch. Nag Ashwin roped in Vijay Deverakonda as Nani’s friend who forces Nani to embark on the life changing trip. Nag Ashwin crafted the movie with raw human emotions and the movie guarantees to evoke something profound in the viewers.
Mahanati: When Keerthy Suresh was roped in for the biopic of the late actress Savitri, many were skeptical about his choice as Keerthy Suresh was still a fresher in the industry and has never essayed such a demanding role. When the movie was released, people were in awe of both the movie and Keerthy Suresh’s performance as Savitri. Nag Ashwin’s vision as a director was evident with this movie. Mahanati was a biopic of Savitri which showcased the lesser known side of the actress. Nag Ashwin put forth a cinematic gem in the form of Mahanati and the movie deservingly so, won three National awards.
The director ventured into the OTT platform with the Netflix anthology movie Pitta Kathalu (2021.) He directed the segment xLife which has a futuristic setting where humans are consumed by virtual reality and fail to communicate with people in real life. Through this movie, he showcased that love, friendship and family is what makes human relationships special.
Nag Ashwin for his next movie is working with the pan Indian star Prabhas and Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone. Amitabh Bacchan is reported to play a crucial role. This project is based on the concept of time travel. Nag Ashwin produced Jathiratnalu which became the biggest comedy blockbuster of this year and received plaudits from audience and critics alike.
