Chandramukhi is the story of Kailash (Prabhu) and Ganga (Jyothika,) a newly married couple who purchase an ancient mansion. The mansion is said to be haunted by the ghost of Chandramukhi, a dancer who along with her lover, was brutally murdered by the King Venkatachalapathi.   The inhabitants start to feel a supernatural presence in the house as things break inexplicably and the sound of anklets is heard.  Ganga is mystified by Chandramukhi’s story and looks for ways to learn about her.  Eeshwar (Rajinikanth,) a psychiatrist and a friend of Kailash arrives at the place to investigate the mysterious occurrences.

Why is Chandramukhi iconic?

Chandramukhi was the Tamil adaptation of the Malayalam movie Manichitrathazu.  The movie was remade in several Indian languages, however Chandramukhi stands tall as the best adaptation.  Chandramukhi was a pioneer in the genre of horror comedies, which later took over South Indian cinema.  Additionally, the movie also popularised the concept of mental illnesses  especially, split personality disorder.  Chandramukhi has one of the best discographies in South Indian cinema.  The songs of this movie are evergreen.   Vaarai Naan Unnai Thedi, is  one of the most recognisable songs.  The acting from the star cast was one of the reasons for the movie’s grand success.   Rajinikanth’s portrayal as a dynamic psychiatrist and Jyothika’s performance as a woman with split personality disorder was lauded.
