The Indian Movie industry lost one of its greatest artists S.P. Balasubramanyam, who succumbed to post COVID-19 complications in Chennai. SPB’s demise saw an outpouring of grief from all corners of the country even as he was given a fitting farewell with full state honours and a 21 gun salute. Both the Andhra Pradesh and the Tamil Nadu governments requested the Central Government to cofer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour to S.P. Balasubramanyam.
The Padma Awards for 2020 were finally announced and the legendary singer SPB was posthumously conferred the Padma Vibushan, India’s second highest civilian honour. Another legendary singer K.S. Chitra was also conferred with the Padma Bhushan for her contribution in the field of Arts. Another noted singer and celebrity Bombay Jayashri was also conferred with the Padma Shri award for her contribution to arts. SPB was also conferred with Padma Bhushan in 2011.

S.P. Balasubramaniam was admitted to the MGM Hospital in Chennai on August 5th, 2020 when he tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, his condition has slowly deteriorated and SPB had to be put on a ventilator. Although the legendary singer tested negative for the COVID-19 virus, he succumbed to post COVID complications and passed away.
S.P. Balasubramanyam’s latest honour will bring a smile to the faces of millions of fans across India. SPB even holds a Guinness Record for the most number of songs sung by an artist and is only fitting that he was conferred with India’s second highest civilian honour for his outstanding contribution to Indian music.
