Ponninyin Selvan is an ambitious project directed by Mani Ratnam. Ponniyin Selvan is based on a historical fiction novel of the same name, written by author Kalki Krishnamurthy. The novel tells the story of Rajaraja Chola I of the Chola dynasty. The movie shooting was halted due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the consequent nationwide lockdown.
However, the shooting schedule for Ponninyin Selvan finally resumed after a gap of nine months. The movie schedule is progressing in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City. Every crew member and cast on set were tested for the COVID-19 virus and only then were they allowed to join the sets of Ponninyin Selvan. The shoot went ahead only after every member was tested negative for the COVID-19 virus.
The project went on the floors in Thailand in 2019 December where the first schedule was filmed for over 90 days. Actors Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Aishwarya Lekshmi took part in the first schedule.
Mani Ratnam already signed on some big names for Ponninyin Selvan, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who will be appearing in a dual role. The movie has an ensemble cast consisting of Karthi, Vikram, Trisha Krishnan, Vikram Prabhu, Jayam Ravi, Aditi Rao Hydari, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shobitha Dhulapila and many others.
Ponninyin Selvan is being jointly produced by Mani Ratnam and Lyca Productions while Siva Ananth is the film’s Executive Producer. A.R. Rahman will be composing the music and Ravi Varman has been roped in for cinematography.
