Surbhi Puranik began her career in 2013 and made a debut into the South Indian film industry with Tamil film, Ivan Veramathiri. The actress rose to fame from Raghuvaran B.Tech and has carved a niche for herself in Telugu cinema with superhit films like Express Raja and Gentleman.
In an exclusive chat with Telugu Filmnagar, Surbhi speaks about her upcoming film Sashi and about her debut in Sandalwood, and also answers few fun questions. Check it out here:
Your favourite films that you have been part of?
My favourite films which I have been part of are the ones that explored the potential of an actor in me, challenged me to emote and gave me a high to perform. Once I began to be the character, it didn’t matter at all, if the shoot were for 2 shifts back to back from 7 in the morning to the next day at 8 AM. I would pick my best 3 movies – Okkakshanam, Express Raja and Ivan Veramathiri.
From an art student to a popular actress, what was the journey like?
The journey has been no less than a movie itself, when dreams become reality! I have been connected to art since childhood, both art and acting are forms of self expression & creativity. For me, both mediums have been a process of self discovery and the freedom to explore. One art form led to another and there is always something fresh to discover, be it in front of a camera or a canvas you just have to pour your soul out.
One lesson you learned from this Pandemic.
The biggest lesson I learned is to become aatma-nirbhar(Aatmanirbharta). This phase has made me realize the potential in me and it has also awakened the inner chef in me. The happiness you get when you cook your own meal!
Can you tell us about your upcoming projects?
My next Telugu movie is with hero Aadi Saikumar, the movie is titled Sashi and it is an innocent love story, where my character loves the idea of being in love and how she balances the innocent and the tomboyish attitude at the same time very well. The film is directed by Srinivas Naidu produced by Hanuman Movie Makers.
Also, this year I am debuting in the Sandalwood industry, happy to share screen space with hero golden star Ganesh. The movie is titled Sakath and I play the role of a TV Anchor of a music show. Directed by Simple Suni and produced by KVN Productions.
Nani was already considered as a Natural Star when Gentleman was happening. So did you have any kind of pressure to be the best always?
If actors gel with each other, they work well together, so Nani apart from being a Natural star, he is a very grounded person and he made me very comfortable on sets, his infectious energy rubs off on you, you are either laughing with him or cracking jokes. There was no pressure as such, but a lot of fun and comfort to work with him, he would always encourage me to give the best shot and would appreciate my inputs and improvisations.

What’s the weirdest thing a fan has done for you?
Asked me to give an autograph on his hand with a pencil, instead, I gave him blessings!
If you are asked to eat only 1 dish every day, what would you choose?
ONLY 1??? that’s a tough one for a food lover!! I love Italian cuisine, so being at home I discovered an Indo-Italian dish called roti-pizza, which is healthy also, so that’s been my lockdown favourite dish.
Unlike other professions, actors are always supposed to be open to all kinds of criticism from everyone. Do you think it is too much to handle sometimes?
Criticism is part and parcel of an actor’s life. Criticism should be handled in a way that makes you stronger, not weaker. If criticism is constructive and taken in good stride, it can help you grow to make yourself better. But also believe in your instincts.
Your Instagram posts say that you miss dressing up. Are you the type of girl who wants to look best every time you step out or the other type who wears comfy jeans & t-shirt all the time?
Comfort is my number one priority. So, my go to outfit would be comfy jeans paired up with an elegant and subtle tee, accessorize with funky earrings to make it a statement.
