South Korean movie Parasite (2019) made waves at the 92nd Academy Awards, which took place on February 9th, 2020, as it bagged the award for Best Picture. This news was celebrated across the world and the fact it was the first movie not made in Hollywood to win an Oscar gave hope to many filmmakers across the world.
Soon after Parasite stole the limelight at the Oscars, many Indians clamoured to watch the dark humour movie and slowly realised it had too many similarities to the Tamil movie Minsara Kanna (1999,) which had actor Vijay in the lead role. Not long after, social media platforms were flooded with the news the concept of Parasite was a rip off of Minsara Kanna.

However, the controversy did not stop there as new reports indicate P.L. Thenappan, the producer of Minsara Kanna, is planning to sue the producers of Parasite. Additional reports also say P.L. Thenappan is in touch with international lawyers to file a lawsuit against Parasite.
Minsara Kanna was directed by K.S. Ravikumar and had Khushbu, Rambha, Monica Castelino, Manivannan and Mansoor Ali Khan in supporting roles. Minsara Kanna follows the story of a millionaire from the United States of America, who visits India to pursue his love interest. The millionaire’s family members embed themselves in the house of his love interest by taking up daily wage jobs.
While the fans have divided opinions about Parasite and Minsara Kanna, there is no doubt both the films are works of art.
