Mainstream sports in India are most often limited to cricket, which is religiously followed by most Indians. Other sports find it hard to compete with cricket and it is not very common to find Indians who represent the Country in various sports at the Olympics, which is the pinnacle of human excellence.
However, occasionally, Indian athletes win medals at the Olympics and make the Nation proud. Karnam Malleswari is one such athlete who won an Olympic medal in the weightlifting category. She won a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics, becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics. Karnam Malleswari was also awarded the Rajiv Khel Ratna by the Government of India.
Senior producer Kona Venkat wants to tell Karnam Malleswari’s inspiring story on the silver screen. Sources also report many industry biggies would be a part of this multilingual project, which is going to be made as a pan Indian movie. Kona Venkat met Karnam Malleswari, who hails from Amadalavalasa of the Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. One of the purposes of the meeting was to acquire exclusive rights to make the biopic.
An official announcement is expected to be made soon. Should the movie project take off, it will be welcome news as it throws light on Karnam Malleswari’s journey to the Olympics.
