Tollywood has been a haven for many actresses who come and carve out their destiny in Telugu cinema. Not only is the movie industry here financially rewarding, but it also gives roles of substance for honing the acting skills of the young ladies who migrate from Mumbai, Kerala or Tamil Nadu for greener pastures.
The year 2019 has been one with many leading ladies giving their best in some challenging roles. Some of these women ended up as the most profitable additions to a movie for producers and directors.
We list the top 5 performances of 2019 by leading ladies in Tollywood.
- Taapsee Pannu as Swapna in Game Over
This Ashwin Saravanan movie focussed on issues like intense depression, having psychological trauma and raised questions about women’s welfare in India.
Taapsee Pannu, who played the role of Swapna, a game designer who is constantly haunted by her past, gave a powerful portrayal of a single woman and her difficulties in life to emerge as a winner.
For most of the screen time of Game Over, Taapsee held the audience in thrall with her range of emotions. In some scenes, she did so without any dialogues. This movie is easily the toughest role she played in her career and she came out victorious.
- Samantha Akkineni as Swathi in Oh! Baby
This Nandini Reddy movie about how to treat one’s elders in the household had Samantha replicate the body language and dialogue delivery of the legendary actress Lakshmi, who played the granny, the central character of this movie. Samantha’s comic timing was bang on and added small nuances for this role of Swathi. Samantha gave her best performance of 2019 in Oh! Baby, followed by her act in Majili.
- Shraddha Srinath as Sarah Arjun in Jersey
Shraddha Srinath is a wonderful actress who already made her mark in Kannada cinema with U Turn. The actress took up a challenging role in the Gowtam Tinnanuri directorial Jersey as a breadwinning housewife who has to feed her husband, who is in dire straits of his cricketing career. Her scenes with Nani displayed what a great performer she is, where she primarily used her eyes and body language to convey emotions. This is clearly one of the most memorable performances of 2019 in Tollywood.
- Rashmika Mandanna as Lilly in Dear Comrade
This movie was all about a career woman and her feelings both as an individual and a professional. Rashmika gave a moving portrayal of Lilly, who wants to make it big in Indian women’s cricket, but has to fight her mental demons to gain her deserved place. The climax scenes in the movie will go down as one of the most iconic performances by a leading lady in Tollywood for times to come. Her chemistry with the charming Vijay Deverakonda added to her already fantastic role as Lilly.
- Regina Cassandra as Sameera in Evaru
Though Evaru was a remake of The Invisible Guest, the movie had its own soul to be displayed. The crime thriller had many ensemble cast who did well in their roles, but Regina stood out for her act as Sameera, a powerful and manipulative businesswoman. The way Regina used her face, including her eyes and eyebrows, to convey emotions such as vengeance and despair, was stunning. She is undoubtedly a gifted actress. Her role in this movie defied the stereotype of how a Tollywood heroine should be-simple and docile. Regina was all but these traits in this movie. She is a whiff of fresh air in Tollywood.
We congratulate all these performers for giving us a memorable 2019. We look forward to December 2019 for the performances of Raashi Khanna and Shalini Pandey in Prati Roju Pandaage and Iddari Lokam Okate respectively!
