The actress started her career as a dancer, being trained in Bharatanatyam.  Having acted with the greats of the day like N.T. Rama Rao, who was her mentor, she also acted with Tamil greats like Sivaji Ganesan and M.G. Ramachandran.

Legendary director L.V. Prasad cast Geetanjali as the leading lady in Illalu (1965,) which had her play a double role.  However, it was her combination with actors like Padmanabham, Raja Babu and Balakrishna, who were comedians, which was a big hit.

Here, we list the top 5 memorable movies of Geetanjali.

  1. Seetharama Kalyanam (1961)

Seetharama Kalyanam, which marked the directorial debut of late N.T. Rama Rao, is a classic in Telugu cinema.  The movie was a musical hit and had the handsome Haranath as Lord Rama and Geetanjali as Goddess Sita.  The songs are still remembered by fans of Geetanjali.

  1. Dr. Chakravarthy (1964)

The movie was the first Telugu movie adapted from a popular novel, Chakrabhramanam, by Koduri Kousalya Devi.  Geetanjali played the role of Sudha, the cancer affected sister of Dr. Chakravarthy (played by A. Nageswara Rao.)  Usually, Geetanjali’s movies had great songs picturised on her. The song Padamani Nannadagavalena is a classic till date.

  1. Murali Krishna (1964)

This moving drama had Geetanjali play the role of a rich girl, who is widowed on the day of her wedding.  Her role of Poornima was a tough one to play, but Geetanjali came out trumps. The movie had memorable music by Master Venu.  Jamuna, whom Geetanjali considered her God given elder sister, played the main lead in this movie.

  1. Sambarala Rambabu (1970)

This middle class drama had Geetanjali play the role of a Brahmin lady, which she carried off with finesse and aplomb.  Her good fortune was she had superhit solos picturised on her, sung by greats like P. Susheela and S. Janaki. Pakkinti Meenakshammanu from this movie is an evergreen hit to this day.

  1. Kalam Marindi (1972)

The K. Viswanath classic, which was a statement on caste discrimination, had Geetanjali play the role of a zamindar’s daughter who marries a secularly minded man.  The movie presented Geetanjali’s another facet of serious acting, which was one of the aspects of the movie’s success.

We feel gratified we had such a gentle soul and great actress, who accepted every challenge which came her way, amongst us.

Rest in peace, Geetanjali garu.
