Vennela Kishore : The Successor To Brahmanandam

Can anyone forget the U.S.A., returned prospective bridegroom Kishore in Geetha Govindam, who created a comedy of errors, not knowing it is a trap laid for him by Govind (Vijay Deverakonda?)

Or can one even be oblivious of the role of Sri Chilipi (designed tastefully by Mohan Krishna Indraganti) in Ami Tumi, who again plays the jester manipulated by both Adivi Sesh and Srinivas Avasarala?

The former role in Geetha Govindam, more or less maps the career choice of Bokkala Kishore Kumar, known popularly as Vennela Kishore, who has become a must in each big film in Tollywood as the supporting comedian to the main lead.

Such is his importance, even an out and out action extravaganza like Saaho, starring the towering Prabhas, had Kishore in the star cast to provide the mandatory laughs.

It has been a long jump for Kishore, from being a software engineer in the U.S.A., to an inevitable ingredient in Telugu mainstream cinema.

September 19th, 2019 marks the 39th birthday of Vennela Kishore. We look at his top five hilarious screen presences in movies till date.

1. Vennela (2005)

The movie which made Kishore get instant stardom is undoubtedly his debut movie, Vennela. The movie was shot almost entirely in the U.S.A., where Kishore completed his Masters in Engineering. Vennela Kishore played a character called Khader Basha, a student who plays a second fiddle to Naveen (Raja,) the protagonist. When the movie released, it created a never before seen craze for Vennela Kishore in Tollywood.
Kishore started creating a trope for himself with his quirky dialogue delivery and comic timing.

2. Lakshmi Raave Maa Intiki (2014)

This movie, starring Naga Shaurya and Avika Gor, had Vennela Kishore playing a mutton shop worker (a kabela,) who feigns to be a software engineer and cheats people with his fake identity. The movie had hilarious scenes which had people in splits and made Vennela Kishore’s place in Tollywood more concrete.

3. Majnu (2016)

Vennela Kishore upped the ante in his comic timing with Majnu. As a taxi driver in Mumbai, his character was named Sanjay Leela Bhansali in this Nani starrer. The sequences in which Kishore  interacts with the hero are hilarious. As a man who knows Telugu but speaks in Hindi to dupe the visiting Andhraites, Kishore stole the show in this movie even though he did not have much screen time.

4. Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada (2016)

In this supernatural movie, a dark comedy, Kishore played a mentally challenged patient, a man possessed by the spirit of a girl. He is then taken to Kerala for treatment by his friend, Arjun (Nikhil Siddharth.) Kishore had a good characterisation in the movie, which not only provided comic relief, but also formed an important part of the movie.

5. Anando Brahma (2017)

This movie, also a dark comedy, featured Taapsee Pannu in the lead and had Kishore play a deaf man, who is afflicted with night blindness and in a dire state of penury. The man uses his flute whenever he is in distress and this habit of his causes concern for the haunted house, in which ghosts live with him. Kishore literally led the show with the supporting characters, including the leading ghost Taapsee, which made this movie a sleeper hit.

Vennela Kishore is having a great time in Tollywood, with a handful of big and small movies which need him to be the prime comedian. This state of irreplaceability was only enjoyed once by late Relangi Venkatramiah and later, by Brahmanandam.

If Vennela Kishore becomes one such comedian without whom Tollywood cannot survive, it is really a testament to his hard work and ability to adapt to various grades of films.
We hope he continues to make merry and make his fans happy. A happy 39th birthday to Vennela Kishore.
