The 66th National Film Awards were announced on August 9th, 2019. Gujarati film Hellaro won the Best Film award. The Best Actor Award was shared by Bollywood actors Vicky Kaushal and Ayushmann Khurrana for Uri: The Surgical Strike and Andhadhun respectively.
However, it was a field day for Telugu cinema, which won it big at the National Film Awards this time.
Rahul Ravindran, who made his directorial debut with his breezy romance Chi La Sow, won the Best Original Screenplay Award, making his debut a memorable one.
The biggest winners from Tollywood were undoubtedly Mahanati and Awe!, both unique films based on interesting stories.
Mahanati, the movie which traced the extraordinary life of the late actress Savitri won its lead actress, Keerthy Suresh, the National Film Award for Best Actress. The role of the legendary actress was one of a lifetime for Keerthy. Mahanati also won the awards for Best Costume Design and most importantly, for Best Telugu Feature Film.
The Prashant Varma directorial Awe!, which focussed on multiple personality disorder, won the awards for Best Makeup and Best Special Effects.
The Ram Charan starrer Rangasthalam won the award for Best Audiography.
The Hindi historical Padmaavat won its music director Sanjay Leela Bhansali the Best Music Director award and Arijit Singh the Best Male Playback Singer award.
