Chaithanya, nicknamed Bobby (Vijay Deverakonda) is a student from Vizag, who comes to study at Kakinada Degree College and turns out to be a student leader. Bobby is an active member of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and questions any injustices committed by the administration, towards the student community. Lilly (Rashmika Mandanna) is an aspiring woman cricketer from Hyderabad, who stays in Kakinada with her family due to her father’s job in Kakinada. Chaithanya and Lilly are drawn close through various incidents in the college and fall in love. However, Lilly is sensitive to any event and fears the rebellious nature of Bobby, which lands their love life in some problems and both break up in a clash of egos. Vijay meets Lilly after 3 years in an unexpected situation. What’s the reason behind the decision taken by Lilly? Who is responsible for Lilly’s situation? How does Bobby overcome the situations? Does he unite with Lily? The answers to these questions form the rest of the story of Dear Comrade.
Dear Comrade is a great love story, which shows the importance of companionship and camaraderie which people in a relationship should share. The movie explains an important aspect of a relationship, based on being a friend and a companion to one’s love, in times of despair and pain, rather than only in times of happiness.
Vijay Deverakonda is a delight as always to watch and his character follows a definite arc, from a student leader, a fighter for justice and a true ‘comrade’ to his lover. The scenes where he interacts with Rashmika in her cricketing sessions and their understanding of their roles are stunning. This movie will be counted as one of the mainstay in Vijay’s repertoire. Rashmika plays an innocent, naive girl who is devastated at any injustice committed towards anyone, but cannot retaliate on her own. The character she plays of a cricketer is a rarity in Tollywood, for a leading lady which she carries out with aplomb.
As has been the case, Justin Prabhakaran’s music and background score in action sequences and the scenes where Rashmika interacts with Vijay are memorable. Dear Comrade is arguably the best musical album of 2019 in Telugu cinema.
Sujith Sarang’s camera looms through the beautiful locales of Vagamon, Athirapally and Ladakh and mesmerizes the audience.
In its entirety, Dear Comrade is the labour of love from Bharat Kamma, who does a stupendous job of giving a role of substance to the heroine and giving her equal space with the hero. The screenplay of Dear Comrade will be talked about for quite some time, for the way it treated an unusual love story.
Go and watch Dear Comrade, it’s an experience of a true love story, one of true companionship!
