iSmart Shankar Movie Review

iSmart Shankar Review

Ram Pothineni, after Hello Guru Prema Kosame, is in an experimenting mode.  The Energetic Star is now a part of a mass masala movie directed by the guru of this genre, Puri Jagannath.  The actor director duo are coming together for the first time, in Puri Jagannath’s own production, iSmart Shankar, for which he collaborated with Charmee.

The teaser and trailer of the movie generated a positive buzz among the fans of Ram Pothineni and Puri Jagannath. The Telangana dialect Ram speaks as Shankar is already a hit with people.

Story:
Shankar is an Old City guy, who works for land settlements.  He falls in love with Chandini (Nabha Natesh,) a girl whom he meets while settling a deal.  However, he is immediately jailed for the murder of politician Kasi Reddy. After Shankar gets released from jail, he deliberately gets injected with a chip, containing the memories of other individuals, in his brain by scientist Pinki (Nidhhi Agerwal.)  Why were these memories of other individuals injected into Shankar’s mind? Did Shankar kill Kasi Reddy? What is the relation between Shankar and CBI officer Arun (Satyadev?) The answers to these questions form the rest of the story of iSmart Shankar.

Review:
iSmart Shankar is a great comeback vehicle for both Ram Pothineni and Puri Jagannath.  Puri, who gave an image revamp to Pawan Kalyan for Badri and Ravi Teja for Idiot, now did it for Ram Pothineni.  The get up, costumes, body language and massy dialogues by Ram send the audience into a hysterical frenzy.  Ram sheds his ‘chocolate boy’ image from previous films and strives to come out with flying colours in iSmart Shankar.

The movie looks like a Puri hangover, with his trademark one fight, one scene formula. Nabha Natesh steals the show with the equally engaging firebrand role of Chandini.  Her chemistry with Ram is both sizzling and electrifying. Sayaji Shinde and Ashish Vidyarthi, who play the main villains, do their part well.

The music by ace composer Mani Sharma is a treat to hear.  The earthy sounds of Old City, the catchy rhythms of Hyderabadi slang, etc., come alive in his background score. Mani Sharma tries to elevate each scene with an appropriate background score.
Raj Thota’s camera works wonders, especially in the action sequences which take place in Old City and also in Varanasi.  The costumes of Ram Pothineni in Varanasi are flamboyant and reflective of his fierce inner self.

In total, iSmart Shankar is a great entertainer which brings back the old Puri Jagannath magic, with Ram Pothineni taking the lion’s share in the proceedings.

Go and watch this one for the trio of Ram Pothineni, Puri Jagannath and Mani Sharma.
