K. Raghavendra Rao—the very name brings a lot of joy and happiness to the average Telugu cinema viewer. His movies are a great mix of love, action, drama and grand sets and he knows the typical pulse of the audience.
K. Raghavendra Rao, who created the careers of stars like Sridevi, Jayaprada, Jeetendra (his comeback in Hindi) and Tabu, celebrates his 78th birthday on May 23rd. The son of the great Telugu film director, K.S. Prakash Rao, Raghavendra Rao set up the commercial cinema template for Telugu cinema in the 1980s, which is still followed.
Raghavendra Rao gave some of the classics in Telugu Cinema, the chief of which is the 1990 fantasy drama, Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari, starring Megastar Chiranjeevi and the late superstar, Sridevi.
He gave a commercial touch to devotional themes in Telugu cinema with his movies Annamayya (1997) and Sri Ramadasu (2005,) the biographical movies loosely based on the lives of two saint composers of Andhra.
