The 72nd Cannes Film Festival is here and is going to begin on May 14th, with all the celebrities thronging the French Riviera, showcasing their works, trade talk and fashion shows.
This year at Cannes is going to be a dull affair for India as there are no official selections either for competition section or for public viewing. The Indian film industry produced some fine works in 2018, which included the Hindi movies Raazi, Hichki, Andhadhun and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran, apart from the brilliant biopic Manto, about the celebrated poet, Saadat Hasan Manto.
One cannot but get surprised as to why quality films like the Tamil drama Pariyerum Perumal (2018,) which focussed on the caste rhetoric did not get selected for screening. Telugu movies like C/O Kancharapalem, Rangasthalam and Mahanati, which garnered national recognition with the variety of themes and taut screenplays, did not find a place in the open screening section at Cannes Film Festival.
While this is the case, fashion fiestas are a regular at Cannes and Indian beauties are going to walk the ramp here for the Nth time, including Cannes regulars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, apart from Huma Qureshi and Hina Khan.
The first look of Hina Khan’s debut movie, Lines, is going to be unveiled at Cannes.
The Cannes Film Festival is the world’s most revered movie platform, the 72nd edition of which will take place from May 14th to May 25th.
