Kamalakara Kameswara Rao,  one of the best and legendary directors helmed Gundamma Katha. He predominantly worked in the Telugu film industry and worked on some of the biggest hits of  this era, such as Patala Bhairavi, Nartanasala, Mahamantri Timmarusu and Mahakavi Kalidasu. Under his direction, all the Telugu movies on which he worked  became some of the biggest hits because he depicted a part of Telugu culture through his movies.  Another aspect the director considered while making this movie was bringing in various Telugu dialects of Guntur and East Godavari. This is one of the most appealing factors of Gundamma Katha. Kameswara Rao, the director had the foresight of making the audience feel related to the movie even if it was watched many years later. One can find Gundamma (Suryakantham,) Gantaih (Ramana Reddy,) Raja (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) and Anji (N. T. Rama Rao) in the people  with whom we meet and talk everyday. The plot revolves around two sisters and two brothers. The sisters are under the care of Gundamma. While the elder one is a step daughter, the younger one is the own daughter of Gundamma. The difference in affection, the alliances she plans to  marry off the sisters and her greed are the core elements that make up the story of Gundamma Katha. The story of Gundamma Katha is so relatable and real, it feels like it is  a microcosm of situations and people we encounter in our everyday lives.

A hilarious account of events, a twist in the tale, a family drama and a delightful reunion— Gundamma Katha is a perfect balance of emotions. While love, hate, anger and laughter are all a part of any movie, to strike a perfect balance, a movie needs a director who understands family bonds and relationships. In that aspect, Gundamma Katha is an out and out winner.Aluri Chakrapani and D. V. Narasaraju are the writers of this beautiful story and they deserve the due credit for penning such a wonderful script.

Gundamma Katha featured ANR, NTR, Suryakantham, Jamuna, Savitri, Haranath, S.V. Ranga Rao, L. Vijayalakshmi  and Chaya Devi in lead roles. These actors practically ruled the Telugu film industry during the Golden Age. Fresh and new to the industry, NTR, Jamuna and Savithri put up a tremendous performance in this movie. Rajanala Kaleswara Rao and Mikkilineni played key roles in this movie and the performance of Rajanala evokes uncontrollable laughter even today.

The songs of this movie are another story altogether. Some of the most noted, energetic and evergreen songs are from Gundamma Katha. The song Lechindi Mahila Lokam, which marked the beginning of the whispers of feminism and equality, is recounted and played even today. Some of the other noted songs in this movie are Prema Yatralaku, Manishi Maraledu, Kolo Koloyanna and Aligina Velane Choodali, which are soothing to the heart and superhit melodies. The music composer of this movie was Ghantasala, the musical Brahma of the Telugu film industry. The lyrics were penned by Pingali Nagendra Rao.
