Every time you appreciate an actress for her extraordinary acting capabilities or appreciate a philanthropist for their good deeds, the only person you compare them with is Mahanati Savitri; the legendary actress. After pathbreaking Yevade Subramanyam, Director Nag Ashwin has made a biopic of the first lady superstar of the country Savitri garu. Check out our take on the film.
Madhuravani(Samantha Akkineni), an aspiring journalist accidentally gets to cover the story of Savitri (Keerthy Suresh) as she finds the last letter she wrote. Madhuravani with the help of her photographer friend Vijay Antony (Vijay Deverakonda) tries to unfold the lesser known facts in the life of the legendary actress who’s in coma. What do they find out? How did a normal village girl who lost her father at the age of 6 months emerge as the greatest lady superstar in the history of Indian cinema? How did she end up in poverty? Answers to all these questions form the crux of the story.
Keerthy Suresh is extraordinary as Savitri. Right from the way her eyes emote to her body language, she excelled as Mahanati. Especially the way she reprised Savitri in few popular songs and scenes is amazing. Keerthy put her heart and soul in the film for which she’ll be remembered for the longest time. Dulquer Salman makes a decent debut in Telugu Cinema as Gemini Ganeshan. The chemistry between the lead pair is a treat to watch. Samantha Akkineni is impressive Though the screentime is limited,Vijay Deverakonda entertains with his matured performance as photographer Vijay Antony. Naga Chaitanya, Mohanbabu, Shalini Pandey, Krish and all the actors have done justice to their roles.
Hats off to the vision of director Nag Ashwin. He amazes you with the screenplay and takes you back to the golden era of Telugu Cinema. Performances, Art department, Sound design, background score, editing and production values are amazing. Even with the bigger budget and bigger cast, Mahanati can never be made again. It’s a magical film that gives you an experience of a lifetime.
Mahanati is a classic which will be remembered for its outstanding making & performances. It’s the greatest tribute anyone can ever give to the legendary actress. Don’t miss the epic.
