Beleaguered epic period drama Padmavati, whose release was blocked by the Censor Board due to the controversies that surrounding it, has been finally passed by the CBFC with UA certificate. However, CBFC has directed the film’s director and producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali to change the title from Padmavati to Padmavat.
Set in medieval Rajasthan, the film is touted to be based on Rajput Queen Padmavati. With there is severe objections from Rajput community who demanded to stall the film’s release and even issued death threats to the film’s cast, makers, the government and Censor has dealt the issue nobly considering that it is a sensitive issue concerning to a community.
The historic period drama is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with a massive budget. The film was originally planned for Dec 1st release but due to several threats, controversies, Viacom 18 has announced the film’s postponement.
Going into a one popular version of historical story that is doing the rounds, Rajput Queen Padmavati is married to a noble king and they live in a prosperous fortress with their subjects until an ambitious Sultan(Alauddin Khilji) hears of Padmavati’s beauty and forms an obsessive love for the Queen of Mewar. Besides this, there are several other contrary stories that are doing rounds in public fray.
With allegations, speculations that Bhansali’s Padmavati is based on the popular version of the historical story and may insult the community, a section of people from Rajasthan (Rajputs) had threatened the makers with dire consequences if the film is released. Threats were made to the film’s lead actress Deepika Padukone that her nose would be cut off. Even during the film’s shoot, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was beaten up and later the film’s set was set on fire incurring a great financial loss.
The Rajput community had claimed that the makers have distorted history and has been demanding to stall the film’s release.
As Censor Board finally cleared the film, looks like, there is no stopping for the film’s release further. Even Supreme Court has made it clear that the decision of Censor Board would be final in the issue. The makers of Padmavat are likely to announce its release date soon.
